In Bruges

August 14, 2011

[note: left my camera in paris, so did the best we could with todd's phone]

In the movie version, two hitmen contemplate the meaning of life and death while holed up in Bruges, learning from locals. In my version, I contemplate the meaning of the perfect frites while scampering around town, froggering my way through hoardes of tourists. The end result? A tummy-tingling mix of Belgium’s best:

We started the day off with a spontaneous picnic supplied by fresh pickins from the morning market

Wednesday market on the grand square

After taking an introductory spin around the stalls, I plucked up some smoked halibut, creme fraiche with scallions and mini multigrain buns to make a light morning snack.

so much smoked deliciousness to choose from

fresh sliced smoked halibut

plus local cream cheese

and mini bun

equals perfect late breakfast

and muscadet grapes the size of my head to wash it all down

all under the Church of Our Lady tower

The rest of the day was spent nibbling on examples of some of Belgium’s finest fare:

big plump mussels in tartar sauce

quite literally the best waffle of my life

perfect exterior crisp meets fluffly internal caverns

only thing better than chocolate is chocolate on a stick

the gift that keeps on giving

and dirt-cheap belgian beers for todd

At the end of the day, I didn’t see the inside of any churches, museums of tourist shops, but the experience couldn’t have been better.

And where is the main attraction you may ask?? I’m saving the frites experience for its own post…coming soon!
